An astronaut miner extracting the precious moon gas that promises to reverse the Earth’s energy crisis nears the end of his three-year contract, and makes an ominous discovery in this psychological sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. For three long years, Sam Bell has dutifully harvested Helium 3 for Lunar, a company that claims it holds the key to solving humankind’s energy crisis. As Sam’s contract comes to an end, the lonely astronaut looks forward to returning to his wife and daughter down on Earth, where he will retire early and attempt to make up for lost time. His work on the Selene moon base has been enlightening — the solitude helping him to reflect on the past and overcome some serious anger issues — but the isolation is starting to make Sam uneasy. With only two weeks to go before he begins his journey back to Earth, Sam starts feeling strange: he’s having inexplicable visions, and hearing impossible sounds. Then, when a routine extraction goes horribly awry, it becomes apparent that Lunar hasn’t been entirely straightforward with Sam about their plans for replacing him. The new recruit seems strangely familiar, and before Sam returns to Earth, he will grapple with the realization that the life he has created may not be entirely his own. Up there, hundreds of thousands of miles from home, it appears that Sam’s contract isn’t the only thing about to expire.

Exploring the comedic twists and emotional turns in one couple’s journey across contemporary America, Away We Go is the new movie from Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty). Longtime (and now thirtysomething) couple Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are going to have a baby. The pregnancy progresses smoothly, but six months in, the pair is put off and put out by the cavalierly delivered news from Burt’s parents Jerry and Gloria (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara) that the eccentric elder Farlanders are moving out of Colorado—thereby eliminating the expectant couple’s main reason for living there. So, where, and among whom of those closest to them, might Burt and Verona best put down roots to raise their impending bundle of joy? The couple embarks on an ambitious itinerary to reconnect with old friends and family, and to evaluate cities. Co-starring Allison Janney, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Paul Schneider and Chris Messina. Featuring music by singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch.

When a genuine romance begins to blossom between Bloom and Penelope, he is reluctant to exploit her naiveté, but Penelope has already taken the bait: She impulsively joins the brothers and their “associate,” a sexy Japanese explosives expert named Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi), on an ocean liner to Greece. Penelope is convinced she’s happened upon the adventure of a lifetime and offers to bankroll a million dollar deal. As the quartet makes their way from Athens to Prague to Mexico to St. Petersburg, Penelope quickly becomes addicted to the illicit thrills. Look for Erin wearing a big smile in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

Profoundly funny and deeply moving, Lymelife looks at first love and family dynamics during a time of drastic economic and cultural change in the late 1970s. Scott (Rory Culkin) is an awkward, sensitive 15-year-old boy whose family life is turned upside-down after an outbreak of Lyme disease hits the community, spreading illness and paranoia. Scott’s parents—a workaholic father (Alec Baldwin) and an overprotective mother (Jill Hennessy)—are on the verge of a divorce as his older brother (Kieran Culkin) is about to ship off for war. Complicating matters, Scott has fallen in love with his next door neighbor, Adrianna (Emma Roberts). Adrianna seems to be the only person in the world who understands Scott, demonstrated by her equally troubled, less-affluent family: an uptight mother (Cynthia Nixon) carrying on a not-so-clandestine love affair, and a father (Timothy Hutton) slowly slipping away from the effects of Lyme disease. Directed by Derick Martini, who wrote the script with his brother Steven (based on their experiences growing up on suburban Long Island), Lymelife is a funny, biting and loving tribute to the American family.
