Escaping the monotony of a loveless marriage, construction supervisor Ray (David Roberts) becomes entangled in an affair with the lovely but troubled Carla (Claire van der Boom). She presents him with a large chunk of money stolen by her husband, suggesting that they keep it for themselves. Ray agrees, and they hire a professional arsonist (Joel Edgerton), which turns out to be the first of a series of deadly errors. At first all seems to go well, but soon the bodies start to pile up, and then the first blackmail note arrives from a mystery author. Written by his brother Joel, this tense thriller is directed by former stuntman Nash Edgerton, who succeeds in building ferocious tension.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of The Runaways, the ground-breaking, all-girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett (Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself — and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock ‘n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.

Based on the Thomas Frank’s best-seller, What’s the Matter with Kansas? shows how Kansas transformed from an outpost of radicalism to a bastion of hard-core conservatism. The film follows two conservative Kansas families as their fortunes suddenly and precipitously decline, and contrasts them with an idealistic Kansas farmer who revives his state’s erstwhile progressive tradition. Angel Dillard, a lifelong Republican activist, helps run the most popular booth at the Kansas State Fair: Kansans For Life. 18-year-old Brittany Barden’s mission is to return America to its roots as “a Christian nation.” Donn Teske describes himself as “a red-neck Kansas farmer.” He also says corporate greed is “not very Christian.” He lobbies the government to save his family farm and others like it. Angel and Brittany both attend Terry Fox’s 6,000-member Immanuel Baptist Church in Wichita. Fox thunders from his pulpit denouncements of gay marriage, abortion and liberal politicians. He urges his flock to vote on the eve of the midterm elections. Then, the winds of change blow across Kansas. Republicans start to lose elections. Terry Fox’s church splinters. And Donn Teske gets a call from Washington. Keep watching — you’ll be surprised who you’re rooting forÂ…
