Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission. Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), helming his last flight before retirement. Then, on a routine space walk, disaster strikes – the shuttle is destroyed, leaving Ryan and Matt stranded in deep space with no link to Earth and no hope of rescue. As their fear turns to panic, they realize that the only way home may be to venture further into space.

When Comedy Went to School answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country’s greatest generation of comicsthe generation that includes Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, delivering jokes and telling their personal stories. The ever-prolific Joe Swanberg (Hannah Takes the Stairs) delivers this seductive romantic comedy, a departure from his previous work. Kate (Olivia Wilde, Tron: Legacy) and Luke (Jake Johnson, Safety Not Guaranteed) are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They’re perfect for each other, except that they’re both in relationships with other people. Jake and his schoolteacher girlfriend Jill (Anna Kendrick, Oscar nominee for Up in the Air) are entering the “Should we get married?” phase of their relationship, while Kate keeps it casual with her older, music producer boyfriend Chris (Ron Livingston, Office Space). An attempt to become “couple friends” further complicates the situation; a few weeks later, Kate and Luke suddenly find themselves alone together for a weekend. The beer starts flowing, and suddenly the line between “friends” and “more than friends” begins to blur in quite unexpected ways.
